The House and Hospitality Committee is responsible for weekly social hours after Meeting for Worship, occasional simple meals, and many of the special events that occur in the Meeting House. Our building is available for rent, for such occasions as weddings, memorial services, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs and other religious activities. A short walk from Haverford College, the Meeting House is a regular setting for alumni/ae weddings, followed by receptions at Founders Hall on campus. We also rent to non-profit groups whose missions are consistent with our Quaker beliefs and practices. Rental rates begin at $600 for four hours, for the entire first floor.
The Meeting Room, dating from 1834, was originally Haverford Meeting's only space. It was constructed in 1834 to hold the entire faculty and student body of the newly chartered College, and enlarged in 1895 when the College had outgrown it. It now seats 350 people comfortably. In cold weather, fires in the two fireplaces add to the ambiance. In warmer weather, the porch running along the western side of the Meeting Room is often used for receiving lines or refreshments. Ramps to the porch and foyer makes the space handicap-accessible.
Our Forum Room is across the hall from our Meeting Room, in the half of the building that was built in 1904. It features a third working fireplace, as well as a Mason and Hamlin baby grand piano. A large table allows easy serving of refreshments, and stacking chairs may be arranged in any configuration for lectures or discussion groups. Immediately adjacent to the Forum Room is the Vaux Room, which serves as our library. Its extra-large center table accommodates a large buffet, or a conference for 10 people. Together, the Forum and Vaux Rooms can host 75 people.
Tucked into a sunny corner between the Forum and Vaux Rooms is the Kitchen. Its expansive stainless steel counters and large refrigerator make for easy event catering. Next to the Vaux Room is the Quiet Room, a small sitting room perfect for a few people who want privacy, or a bride's last-minute primping.
On the second floor, accessed by chestnut stairs, there are facilities for younger friends. The Nursery features lots of toys for toddlers, and comfortable chairs for babysitters. The bright adjacent Multi-purpose Room has books and games for elementary school children, a cozy reading corner, and a central table and chairs for a small conference or for coloring and puzzles. Both rooms are available for an additional fee.
The House and Hospitality Committee is pleased to make everyone's use of our Meeting House a memorable experience.
